Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson is proposing using about $1.2 million in surplus funds from the city's operating budget to allow construction of the Killarney seniors centre.

Robertson will put a motion on notice at Tuesday's council meeting to fill the gap in funding on the centre, which carries a price tag of approximately $7.5 million.

City-owned land and operating space was committed to the centre in 2011 by the parks board, with the city contributing $2.5 million to the project the same year.

The provincial government came forward with $1.3 million for the centre last year and the federal government announced $2.5 million in support two weeks ago — leaving the gap of about $1.2 million.

The proposed centre is in the southeast area of the city and is home to approximately one-third of all Vancouver seniors, but it is the only quadrant without a dedicated seniors centre.
